Vet students have distributed a record number of bags packed with essentials and Christmas treats to people and their dogs living on the streets of Edinburgh.

Almost 100 bags filled with clothing, toiletries, drinks, blankets and food were handed out.

Food and blankets

Rucksacks gifted by Royal Canin were packed by staff and students from the University of Edinburgh Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies and The Roslin Institute.

Items for animals, including toys, food and blankets, were also handed out at All4Paws – a student-run veterinary clinic that provides free care for homeless pets.

Local charities

The bags were handed out directly to people in the city at soup kitchens, in collaboration with local charities aimed at tackling homelessness.

Marie Gallagher, who co-led the scheme, said: “We are delighted to have collected more bags this year than ever before. We hope the donations will be of use to homeless people and their pets around the city.”

Fellow organiser Katie Ross said: “The support from the vet school, and from the staff and students, has been great.

“We were pleased to see first hand how the bags could help people and animals living on the streets.”
