VN Voice: supporting VNs throughout their whole career

by

Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month was well received and the theme, “Where can your RVN qualification take you?” was seen in many countries around the world. VNs really got engaged, and showcased the varied roles and career paths available once qualified.

For the third year running, we have held an election for new council members – it is great to see the people who have the passion and drive to want to help shape the future of our profession.

The newly elected members were welcomed to the team at this year’s annual meeting, which was held at BVNA Congress, but this also meant we had to say a sad farewell to a number of longstanding council members as well. We would like to thank them again for their hard work and dedication over the years.

Moves

After a two-year term as president, Wendy Nevins has moved into the senior vice-president role, which provides vital support and guidance for the whole team. She will be continuing to play a pivotal role in the newly established Veterinary Nursing Taskforce, which is a very exciting collaboration between the BVNA and BVA.

Jo Oakden has moved into the junior vice-president role and she took part in the Animal Welfare Foundation’s obesity debate in one of the fringe sessions at congress. This was an excellent, well-attended debate and I urge you all to watch the recording if you were not able to attend.

We were delighted to once again announce the Blue Cross Vet Nurse of the Year Award, presented to Danielle Pountain for her enthusiasm, extensive knowledge and experience, making her a role model for hard work and self-motivation. Congratulations Danielle.

‘Hugely excited’

I am hugely excited for my presidential year ahead. Welfare in the workplace is my theme, and I am keen to improve welfare for animals and humans, both in the clinic, and throughout the other varied roles nurses carry out.

This variety will also be celebrated and encouraged via our new Learning Pathways model, which allows nurses to progress their education and further their skills via a set of targeted courses, the first of which is our collaboration with the British Veterinary Dental Association.

The BVNA is an inclusive organisation and I would like to support nurses throughout their whole career.

I hope you enjoyed Christmas with your loved ones and that the on-call gods were kind to all those who were working over the festive period.
