In the UK veterinary industry there is renewed focus on the use of a more risk based approach for prescribing parasiticides for companion animals.  

Year-round treatment with broad spectrum parasiticides would, of course, reduce parasite exposure, clinical disease and zoonotic risk. However “blanket treatment” of this nature can lead to a number of potential unintended consequences, including unnecessary medication for pets and, of course, expense for owners. Prescribing parasite treatment on the basis of a risk analysis and as part of wider treatment advice helps to avoid these pitfalls.
