It’s that time of year again – the sun is starting to shine, nurses are wracking their brains for new ideas, displays are going up… and who can forget the great patient selfies? You’ve guessed it, it’s Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month (VNAM).
This year’s campaign is titled “Where can your RVN qualification take you?” In a time where RVN retention is low, the focus is to explore the wide variety of nursing options out there, such as roles in industry, education, therapy, volunteering and many more.
We all know a nurse’s job is never done and we are always in nurse mode – be it waking up in the night to the non-existent drip pump, caring for stray cats on holiday or never saying the Q word again, our passion and dedication follows us wherever we go, and this allows us to take on new roles within our profession with equal enthusiasm.
We are lucky to have a variety of paths to choose from and the ability to transfer skills. Your RVN qualification can take you wherever you want it to.
Still part of it
As a nurse in an industry role (territory manager), I feel this year’s VNAM is more important than ever, for it is sometimes hard for people to understand that those of us no longer in practice are still part of the nursing world.
I have been nursing for 14 years and moved away from the front line 11 months ago. I thoroughly enjoy using my knowledge in a different way and still strongly feel a part of the nursing community.
Many nurses use their qualifications to follow paths in search of something new; something they are passionate about; something life changing. We’ve all been there with bad backs, sore knees, long hours and emotional days, so finding happiness is key.
Whether a frontline nursing, practice management, industry, educational or varied role, as long you are happy and enjoying yourself, that’s all that matters.
VNAM is a time for us to celebrate our profession and, most importantly, our journeys. Everyone’s story is different; no one’s day is the same, but we are all united by the postnominal we hold so dear – RVN.
So, during this celebration, let’s share stories, raise role awareness and spread the word of the RVN. Together, we stand taller.
