The BVA has promised to work with new prime minister Boris Johnson’s government to help lessen the impact of a potential no-deal Brexit on the veterinary profession.
Former Mayor of London Johnson beat rival Tory leadership rival, Jeremy Hunt, comfortably, winning 92,153 votes to his rival’s 46,656.
Challenges
Johnson officially took over as prime minister from Theresa May today (24 July) and the BVA wasted no time responding to the news.
President Simon Doherty said: “BVA recognises the challenges ahead for new UK prime minister, Boris Johnson. We will watch developments over the following weeks with interest in relation to new cabinet appointments.”
Close engagement
He added: “With his well-publicised deal or no-deal strategy it will be important for the new PM to be fully briefed on the consequences of a no-deal Brexit in relation to trade, biosecurity, and the impact on the essential veterinary workforce.
“We will continue to keep our members and stakeholders well-informed about the challenges and opportunities ahead for the workforce and animal welfare, and will engage closely with Government to make sure that vets have a strong voice as post-Brexit policy is negotiated and shaped.”
