StreetVet, a not-for-profit organisation set up to give animals belonging to homeless people access to veterinary care, has scooped £100,000 from Animal Friends Pet Insurance.
Nominated by Veterinary Times, StreetVet was one of three charities put forward for the award, the others being the Celia Hammond Animal Trust and the Bumblebee Conservation Trust.
Big reveal
Members of the public were given six weeks to vote for the organisation they felt was most worthy of the cash – and it was StreetVet that emerged victorious.
Co-founder Jade Statt and other StreetVet volunteers discovered they had won the prize during a reveal event held at Animal Friends’ headquarters in Amesbury on Monday (10 December).
Thank you
Miss Statt said: “This money is game changing for StreetVet and will be instrumental in enabling us to continue to provide the life-saving care we offer to our patients. This fund will allow us to expand the StreetVet service to places where animals belonging to those experiencing homelessness lack access to the veterinary care they need.
“Thank you to Veterinary Times for nominating us, Animal Friends Pet Insurance for its incredible generosity, and to all of those who voted and continue to support us.”
Founding principles
However, the other two nominated charities did not go away empty-handed, as each was given a surprise £25,000 donation.
Westley Pearson, managing director of Animal Friends, said: “I was particularly delighted we chose to celebrate our company’s 20th anniversary by donating such a large amount to a charitable organisation and StreetVet is a very worthy winner as voted for by the public.
“This sizeable donation honours our founding principles; we are here not only to provide affordable pet insurance, but also to donate to animal welfare causes. To that end, we simply couldn’t let the two other nominated charities who participated so enthusiastically in the campaign walk away with nothing.”
