A vet who has battled depression is hoping to win a place on a 186-mile sled dog expedition across the Arctic to raise awareness of mental health conditions and inspire others.

John Pate, 27, from North Yorkshire, is in the running to participate in the Fjällräven Polar 2019 expedition, which sees a group of volunteers traverse 300km of Arctic wilderness with more than 200 sled dogs.
Challenge
Event organisers describe the polar challenge as a test of endurance, fortitude and stamina, that usually requires years of training before being undertaken. But a lucky few who gain enough votes will win a place on the trip in April.
Mr Pate, a vet at Bishopton Equine Veterinary Services, is a keen photographer with a passion for adventure and being outdoors, and is hoping to be one of them.
Inspiration
He said: “Obviously, taking part in the expedition would be an amazing experience for me, but having suffered from depression, I also want to use this opportunity to raise awareness of mental health issues.
“I’ve been quite open about my issues and hopefully that can help others. I want to help inspire others in my situation and show there can be light at the end of the tunnel.”
To secure a place on the adventure, Mr Pate will have to win enough votes. To vote for him, visit his page on the Fjällräven Polar website before voting closes on 13 December.
